This title is part of the following series:

The recorded history of the West is, in a sense, the history of Christianity. How did the religion get its start? This program, based on the New Testament, uses gripping reenactments—from Herod’s infanticidal purge to the crucifixion and burial—to dramatize key moments in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Footage of rituals as well as landmarks both devotional and archaeological adds depth to the study of the man millions would later call the Son of God, while topics including Jesus’ Jewish heritage, the discovery of the Codex Sinaiticus by Konstantin von Tischendorf, and the question of the Shroud of Turin’s authenticity provide points for deeper inquiry. Segments in this Video - (10)

1. Birth of Jesus (04:40)

Though historians disagree on the place of his birth, the appearance of Jesus of Nazareth on Earth changed the history of the world. Fearing for his own power at the time of Jesus' birth, King Herod orders the death of all male babies in Bethlehem.

2. Childhood of Jesus (02:58)

Historians agree that Jesus grew up in Nazareth, though Gospel accounts give little information about those years. He would have been raised according to Jewish traditions, and he "found favor with God and man." Why did he become a preacher?

3. John the Baptist (03:05)

At age 26, Jesus left Nazareth to become a preacher, but first, he went to John the Baptist to be baptized. The Dead Sea scrolls reveal more about the religious order of the Qumran community of the Essenes, of which John was a member.

4. Roman Occupation and the Radical Jesus (02:50)

The Roman governors are troubled by uprisings and unrest among the Jews. Ultimately, the Romans capture the Masada and destroy the temple of Jerusalem. In the synagogue, Jesus teaches concepts that are revolutionary and threatening to Roman rulers.

5. Jesus in Galilee (03:42)

Key events in the historical Jesus' preaching, such as the Sermon on the Mount and the appointment of His disciples, take place near the Sea of Galilee. Gospel writers record miracles of Jesus such as feeding 5000 people and turning water into wine.

6. Ancient Manuscripts (04:33)

In a 1500-year-old monastery, Konstantin von Tischendorf seeks ancient manuscripts extant from centuries closer to the time of Christ. The "Codex Sinaiticus" reveals irrefutable truths of the records of the Gospel writers.

7. Jesus in Jerusalem and His Betrayal (03:58)

As Jesus' following grows, he and his disciples leave Galilee for Jerusalem, the seat of the supreme Jewish authority. During an uneasy Passover celebration, Jesus chases moneylenders from the Temple and participates in the Last Supper with his disciples. Thereafter, Judas betrays Jesus.

8. Conviction and Punishment of Jesus (04:17)

Once betrayed, Jesus is arrested and taken through a spurious trial. After his conviction, Jesus endures unspeakable punishment. The skies darken as He dies on the cross, and in an unusual act, his body is taken from the cross and buried.

9. Burial of Jesus and the Shroud of Turin (04:26)

Details of the burial and resurrection of Jesus seem to confirm evidence found on a shroud called the Shroud of Turin. The care with which the corpse was buried lends authority to the belief that the Shroud depicts the body of Jesus.

10. Resurrection and New Beginnings (06:47)
