Heart Reduction Surgery

Recent advances in the treatment of heart disease have led to a promising procedure called ventricular remodeling. This program provides an in-depth demonstration of the technique by Patrick McCarthy, of the Cleveland Clinic, on a man diagnosed with idiopathic cardiomyopathy. In addition to removing a segment of the left ventricle to reduce the overall size of the heart, Dr. McCarthy also optimizes the heart’s function by reinforcing the mitral and tricuspid valves. The mechanics of cardioplegia are also described, as well as possible post-operative complications. A Discovery Channel Production. (48 minutes)
