Parkinson’s Disease Surgery

After 14 years of enduring the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, a 57-year-old man opted for interactive brain surgery to eliminate part of his hyperactive globus pallidus. In this program, Emory neurosurgeon Roy Bakay and neurologists Jerrold Vitek and Mahlon DeLong team up to perform the pallidotomy. Each stage of the procedure is thoroughly addressed, with a special focus on the electrophysiological brain studies necessary to pinpoint the lesion site and on the creation of the lesion itself. The function of microelectrodes, a thermistor probe, and other high-precision equipment is explained. A Discovery Channel Production. (47 minutes)
