Back to School in Afghanistan

This program explores the precarious condition of Afghanistan’s schools after years of mujahideen and Taliban control. Focusing on poor enrollment, past exclusion of girls, and primary grade curriculum issues—especially the use of war and killing in textbook lessons—the program clearly links American anti-Soviet efforts with the militarization of Afghan culture and education. Interviews with teachers, education ministry officials, and young students clarify Afghanistan’s need to make education the bedrock of a peaceful future. A viewable/printable instructor’s guide is available online. (14 minutes)
