Although he’d never even seen a battle, Stephen Crane wrote a war novel so convincing that it made him an international celebrity. This program studies The Red Badge of Courage and the short life of its author while providing insights into the Civil War, the psychology of combat, and the evolution of war journalism. Experts include Princeton University’s James McPherson, Crane biographer James Colvert, military historian Bruce Gudmundsson, former war correspondent Morley Safer, and veterans of World War II and Vietnam.
