Discovering Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet

Considered Tchaikovsky’s first mature masterpiece, Romeo and Juliet marks the start of the composer’s remarkable career. After conducting the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in a complete performance of the Fantasy Overture, Charles Hazlewood reveals how Tchaikovsky distilled the essence of Shakespeare’s great romantic tragedy into music. Friar Laurence’s theme, the transition to the exposition, the theme representing the Montague/Capulet feud, the bridging passage to the love theme and the iconic love theme itself, the development and retransition sections, the reintroduction of the love theme, and the coda are all examined in detail. Produced by the Open University. (59 minutes)
