Mystery of the Marriage: Jan van Eyck’s The Arnolfini Marriage

Every attempt to fathom the meaning and intent of Jan van Eyck’s masterpiece depicting Giovanni Arnolfini and Giovanna Cenami has typically led to more questions than answers. This intriguing and provocative program examines the clues that have prompted decades of debate over The Arnolfini Marriage. The “marriage certificate” theory of Erwin Panofsky, infrared evidence that the painting’s numerous details were probably not a part of the original composition, the implications of sociohistorical analysis, and the discovery by Jacques Paviot that the Arnolfini marriage actually occurred after van Eyck’s death are investigated. Produced by the Open University. (30 minutes)
