The Fort St. Joseph Project: Service and Learning in the Community

Every year, Western Michigan University conducts an archaeological field school at the site of Fort St. Joseph in Niles, Michigan. Students absorb proper field techniques in a multidisciplinary program of community service learning—researching the social, economic, and political atmosphere of the colonial-era fur trade and disseminating that information to the community. This program documents the third season of the summer field school’s efforts to continue unearthing the fort’s remains while keeping the public informed and inviting community participation. On-site interviews with students, and with WMU professor Dr. Michael Nassaney, highlight the challenges of the project. (17 minutes)
