Koppel on Discovery: The People's Republic of Capitalism-From MAOism to MEism

More than 13 million people live in Chongqing, a city most Americans have never heard of. Less cosmopolitan than Shanghai or Hong Kong, it embodies all the hallmarks of China’s gains and growing pains. This program follows a cast of characters in and around Chongqing, examining the impact of capitalism on religion, sexuality, traditional values, and political attitudes in the burgeoning metropolis. Ted Koppel takes viewers into the red light district, where nightclubs cater to the entire spectrum of human vices—and, in some cases, a bizarre nostalgia for the Mao era. Other topics include the growth of Chinese Christianity and the planned expansion of Chongqing to include surrounding villages. A Discovery Channel Production. (44 minutes)
