Nuclear Energy: The Issues

Almost one-fifth of the world’s electricity comes from nuclear power. Supporters claim it is safe, cheap, and the answer to global warming. Critics call it dangerous, expensive, and hardly the solution to climate change. This program presents arguments for and against nuclear energy while exploring scientific concepts behind it. Topics include: the disposal or storage of radioactive waste; the likelihood and potential consequences of a nuclear power plant accident today; the threat of terrorist attacks on a nuclear facility; the link between nuclear power and nuclear weapons; and the question, “Is nuclear energy really carbon-free?” Historical accounts focus on the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl disasters. Viewable/printable educational resources are available online. (29 minutes)
