Since nearly 80 percent of what we know about our surroundings comes from our eyes, vision has been called the king of senses. This program examines the importance of human vision as well as new research and medical technology that may help the sightless. Case studies highlight a police officer’s remarkable ability to analyze threats and obstacles during a high-speed chase; a firefighter with life-saving visual acuity and alertness; a lifeguard whose surf-scanning skills illustrate the ocular phenomenon of saccade or saccadic movement; and two sightless people—one who has benefited from electrode implants directly into the visual cortex, and another whose eyes have been surgically rebuilt. Dynamic 3-D animation helps demonstrate several concepts. A Discovery Channel Production. Part 3 of the series Human Body: Pushing the Limits. (43 minutes)
