Markus Raetz: The Artist as Magician

The word “YES” morphs into “NO.” A man with a hat becomes a rabbit. A human face doubles as the space between two other faces. These are some of the visual challenges at the core of Markus Raetz’s art—tricks that call into question the viewer’s fundamental assumptions about reality, movement, and change. In this program, the Swiss artist allows cameras into his studio to record his creative process and working methods. From simple, whimsically curved wires to meticulously layered wood sculptures, the documented pieces—interwoven with commentary from members of Raetz’s inner circle—reveal his conceptual and technical prowess. His fascinating sketchbooks and animated films are also featured. (Portions in German with English subtitles, 74 minutes)
