Eli’s Story: Learning to Hear

Eli Steele, 25, wants to be a movie director, but he faces a major obstacle: he is profoundly hard of hearing. After meeting with people who have had cochlear implants surgically inserted, he decides to take the risk and get one too—even though it will cost him the remaining hearing in that ear, with no guarantee of improvement. In this program, Dr. William Luxford, of the University of Southern California’s House Ear Clinic, performs the delicate operation. After the six-week healing process, the device is switched on, with remarkable results. A Discovery Channel Production. (23 minutes)
