Heart transplantation is often the last resort when a person has a diseased heart that no longer functions. But unfortunately there are many more people who need donor hearts than there are hearts available. To help balance this reality, innovative scientists and researchers working for decades have developed the total artificial heart to be a “bridge to the transplant.” This program will educate viewers on the total artificial heart, discussing how a normal heart works, how heart failure can develop, when an artificial heart is needed, what an artificial heart is, and what it does for patients. Viewers will see the history of the development of the artificial heart in its many forms—and hear success stories from recipients. (27 minutes)
