Determined to live a life of “divinity and truth,” William Wordsworth took up residence in a rustic cottage to make real his romantic notions about nature and poetry. Shot on location at Dove Cottage, this program visits the landscapes that inspired some of Wordsworth’s best-loved poems and explores the influence of the Lake District on his work. The video also looks at the contributions of his sister, Dorothy, and at the Wordsworths’ relationship with Thomas de Quincey, an admirer and later tenant at Dove Cottage. Expert commentary from Simon Bainbridge and others includes discussion of and readings from “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud,” “Michael,” and “Home at Grasmere.” (20 minutes)
