The program documents how the development of the computer-operated container ship has altered the geography of the earth. Amsterdam, once the center of a triving Dutch maritime empire, has today been eclipsed by Rotterdam, a huge container port. This program traces the westward journey of a Chinese container ship past the rotting installations of once-thriving Liverpool and the empty docks of Wales which once were filled with the coal that powered the steamships, past the obsolete piers of New York, to Jamaicawhich has adapted and survivedand on, through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific and, after Japan, back to Taiwan.
