Treasures of Neptune: Klondike on the Ocean Floor

The discovery of valuable resources on the ocean floor created first wealth, then havoc. From individual pearl divers to vast industrial drilling rigs, the development of new technologies for bringing to the surface what was once locked beneath the waters has yielded wealth and jobs and destroyed marine ecosystems. This program looks at the recovery systems now in use, from underwater scoops and shovels, to giant vacuum cleaners that suck up everything in their path; explains the relationship between plate tectonics and mineral deposits beneath the sea; and shows how the ocean floor is being mapped to show the face of the earth beneath the water. (26 minutes)
