The Battle of Waterloo: 1815

Of all the battles Napoleon fought, and despite all his great victories, the most famous is the one he lost—Waterloo. This program looks at the events leading up to Waterloo: the French Revolution and the anxieties it aroused in other European monarchies; the ancient enmity between England and France; the rise of Napoleon; his many successes until he failed in Russia; his abdication and removal to Elba; his return; and the battle itself, with all its characters and its character. The Battle of Waterloo was the end of a chapter that had begun with the cry of Liberty, Equality, Fraternity and ended with a military adventure that cost over a million lives. (32 minutes)
