This program follows Bach’s life in Leipzig, showing the hard-pressed and much-harried father, teacher, and civil servant turning out masterpiece after masterpiece on demand and under constant pressure; offers organ music performed from Bach’s own manuscripts; shows the start of a reconstructed Lutheran service of Bach’s time, including the customary congregational hymns; and stages a full performance of the Ascension Oratorio, Cantata No. 11 (Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen—Praise God in His Kingdoms), performed by the Yorkshire Bach Choir and Baroque Orchestra, with soloists Yvonne Seymour, Margaret Cable, Joseph Cornwell, and Stephen Varcos.
