The Wrong Stuff

When fewer than 6% of high school graduates can read a newspaper, write a cohesive essay, or solve a simple two-step arithmetic problem (according to the National Assessment of Education Progress), something is obviously wrong with the American educational system. This program illustrates how old assumptions about school administration, teaching methods, and testing are being challenged, and investigates not only what is wrong with the system, but the kinds of positive experiments that are taking place. Hosted by Judith Light, the program talks to education innovator Ted Sizer (whose ideas have evolved into the Coalition of Essential Schools), businessman Joe Kellman (founder of Corporate Community Schools of America), leaders of Chicago’s Parent Community Council, and participants in Indianapolis’ Key School experiment, which is based on Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences.
