The Unusual Suspects: How Society and People with Disabilities Regard Each Other

How does the world regard, influence, and interact with people with disabilities? This program, written and presented by a sociologist with achondroplasia, looks at how society and science—both medical and social—have variously construed the issue as an individual problem and a concern for the public at large. A number of people with different kinds of disabilities discuss their experiences and perceptions. The program concludes with a balanced assessment of the implications of scientific breakthroughs such as pregnancy screening and genetic manipulation in relation to disabilities. Produced by the Open University. (30 minutes)
