Ruth’s Story: Parkinson’s Deep in the Brain

Once very active, Ruth Hamilton is slowly but steadily being robbed of her physical functionality by early-onset Parkinson’s disease. After treating her condition conservatively for 13 years, 57-year-old Ruth is ready to raise the stakes by trying something riskier, perhaps, but with a good chance of success: deep brain stimulation. In this program, neurosurgeon Antonio De Salles performs the procedure at the UCLA Medical Center, implanting electrodes in Ruth’s brain that are her best hope for relief from her debilitating symptoms. A Discovery Channel Production. (23 minutes)
