Mosquito Nightmare: West Nile Virus

In the summer of 1999, New York City found itself at the center of a hot zone, an outbreak of a microscopic invader never seen before in the western hemisphere. The mystery disease, which caused encephalitis and seemed to strike only the elderly, claimed seven lives. This case study in epidemiology highlights how doctors and infectious disease experts raced to determine the identity of a pathogen that turned out to be West Nile virus, an organism carried by birds and transmitted to humans by mosquitoes.
