Le Corbusier: Villa La Roche

Le Corbusier believed that modern life should dictate architectural schema; his designs freely lifted the superficial forms of industrial products and structures. An expert on Le Corbusier’s work of the 1920s and 30s, Tim Benton leads an insightful tour of the Villa La Roche in Paris, explaining the history and motives behind this groundbreaking house and gallery designed for the Swiss banker and art collector, Raoul La Roche. Comparing the building now to photographs taken in the 1920s, Benton shows the relationship of the house to Purist painting, the evolution of its design, and its innovative exploration of the structural possibilities of reinforced concrete. Produced by the Open University. (25 minutes)
