Virtual Guidance Office

Let the Virtual Guidance Office help you answer your students’ frequently asked questions on academic issues, preparing for college, and preparing for a career. It gets to the nitty-gritty of students’ most common questions and concerns—and saves you hours and hours of time in the process!

After using the program, students will be able to:

• Evaluate which high school courses will advance specific college and career interests

• Begin the college and/or career search process—and select a path that is right for them

• Explore financial strategies to pay for college

• Write an effective resume

• Gather materials for a career portfolio

• Complete a job application

• Know where to turn for additional college/career information and advice

Features:

• Clickable Q&As that yield either a video clip response from a guidance professional or an audio clip with text or graphics that help explain the answer

• Hall Pass icons, pop-up facts on college, careers, and life after high school

• A resource list of Web sites, publications, videos, and CD-ROMs that offer additional information

• A viewable/printable teacher’s guide containing educational standards, learning objectives, a program summary, vocabulary terms, fast facts, discussion and assessment questions, student activities, and additional resources

• A glossary

The program contains answers to 150 separate questions, grouped into three areas:

• General Questions: Supplies information on how guidance counselors can help, including discussion on a wide range of here-and-now concerns, as well as how to make the most of an appointment with a real guidance counselor.

Sample questions: "When is it too late to improve my GPA?" "How many extracurricular activities are enough?" "How can I tell my parents that college isn’t for me?"

• Preparing for College: Answers questions about the ins and outs of the college entrance process: exams, choosing a school, applications, transcripts, deadlines, recommendations, essays, picking a major, financial aid—the works!

Sample questions: "What information is included on my transcript?" "Can I use the same application for more than one college?" "What kinds of questions will an employer ask my reference?"

• Preparing for a Career: Gives the details of building a resume, creating a portfolio, filling out job applications, and interviewing.

Sample questions: "What are the benefits of working before college?" "Should I prepare a resume for a part-time job?" "How do I bring up salary during a job interview?"

Use the Virtual Guidance Office to field the many common questions students have so your guidance sessions can address the issues only you can answer!
