The Anthropology of Murder

In this program, anthropologist Elliott Leyton takes a close look at how cultural and political forces shape and are shaped by humankind’s capability to kill. His contrasting studies of Canada, America, and England enable him to draw powerful sociological conclusions based on definitions of justifiable homicide, firearm availability, murder investigation procedures, rates of incarceration, application of the death penalty, and the glorification of violence through movies and video games. An examination of murder used as a large-scale weapon—terrorism, war, and state-sponsored genocide—concludes the program. Viewer discretion is advised. (50 minutes)
