Natural Gas Hydrates: The Fuel of the Future?

This program tracks the progress of a multinational research team headed by Scott Dallimore, of the Geological Survey of Canada, and Tim Collett, of the U.S. Geological Survey, as the team members tap and study deposits of natural gas hydrates—colossal reserves of clean-burning energy—located in the Canadian tundra. In the process, they address the technical and economic challenges of processing methane hydrates for consumer use. Gaseous methane, bubbling up through the ice, is studied as well. Is it coming from methane hydrate deposits or from somewhere else? And to what extent is it adding to global warming? (20 minutes)
