Medical Decisions: A Child’s Life in the Balance

When a child’s organs start to fail, a transplant is usually the best option—but not always. In this program, specialists at Children’s Memorial, home of the renowned Siragusa Transplantation Center, present the difficult case of an 11-year-old boy. His successful liver transplant has become infected, and now his mother must decide: opt for the risks of a second transplant or bet his life that the potentially fatal infection can be treated? The shortage of organs for transplant in general is also discussed. Transplant surgeon Dr. Riccardo Superina is featured. (55 minutes)
