Breast Cancer and Intimacy

This program explores, with sensitivity and compassion, the emotional and physical impact of breast cancer on a patient’s identity as a woman. Covering issues of self-image and sexuality, the video focuses on five couples ranging in age from their 30s to their 60s to illustrate unique and common aspects of breast cancer among different age groups. These survivors and their spouses as well as a surgeon, a psychiatrist, and a counselor speak frankly about being diagnosed, breaking the news to children, surgery, side effects, reconstruction, reestablishing physical intimacy, and the vital importance of open communication throughout the process. Footage of a lumpectomy is included. Filmed in cooperation with the American Cancer Society. A Discovery Channel Production. (46 minutes)
