This program examines the different kinds of Spanish spoken in the U.S. and their relationship to the Spanish of San Juan or the Dominican Republic, as well as the evolution of Spanish in the U.S. and the ways it is being used by many second- and third-generation Americans. In Texas, where Spanish has been spoken much longer than English, bilingualism is common; a linguistics expert, a radio announcer, and a poet are interviewed on the phenomenon of "code-switching," the interchangeable use of English and Spanish by bilinguals in South Texas.
