Christmas carols originated in dances that date back to the seventh century. This program traces the progress of carols from their pagan beginnings, through the first printed carol in 1521, their condemnation by the Puritans, to their Victorian revival. In the process, it offers singers, dancers, and instrumentalists performing, among others, "The Holly and the Ivy," "The Coventry Carol," "Angelus ad Virginem," and "Unto Us a Boy Is Born." "Good King Wenceslas" is performed in its original version as a danced carol, and "The Boars Head Carol" is arranged in full Tudor glory. (52 minutes)
