The Process of Birth

There is no gainsaying that, no matter how or where in the world, giving birth is stressful for the mother and a drastic reorientation for the child. What is the best birthing position for the mother—lying down, sitting, standing, kneeling, crouching? Should the birth take place in a hospital or a birthing space, and who should be in attendance—doctor, midwife, father? When should the baby be put to the mother’s breast? When does bonding begin? This program shows how different cultures and different individuals within the same culture respond to these questions. (23 minutes)
