Open Heart Surgery

A critical part of the heart—our most vital organ—is its pumping system and the valves that help control the flow of blood. If a valve leaks or becomes clogged, the heart receives too much or too little blood. The result can be fatal. It is now possible to replace damaged valves safely and reliably by means of open heart surgery. Dr. Gaudiani of Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, CA, explains how and why heart valve defects occur and how they are repaired. With the help of a head camera, we look inside a human heart and see in detail how a surgical team replaces malfunctioning heart valves. A Discovery Channel Production.
