Cornea Transplant

The cornea is the outermost lens of the eye and serves as the window through which light enters the eye. When the cornea becomes cloudy, opaque, or painful as a result of injury or disease, cornea transplant surgery becomes necessary. The operation usually takes an hour and a half and is the most common of all transplant surgeries. Sixty-nine-year-old Margaret Hurr has a failing cornea in her right eye. But unlike so many patients ophthalmologist Dr. Linda Burk sees, Margaret also has a failing intraocular lens, located just behind the iris. Both lenses will be repaired through microscopic surgery using human tissue obtained from a recently deceased donor. A Discovery Channel Production. (45 minutes)
