Reconstructive Hand Surgery

Maria was born with only a pinkie and four stubs on her left hand. Dr. David Chiu of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York performs an eight-hour operation on the 14-month-old that transplants the second toe of her left foot to her ring finger nub, connecting the bone, veins, and arteries to create a single but complete digit. The transported toe will look like a toe but have superior sensitivity because the brain will send messages to it as if it were a finger. Both family and doctor expect that one day little Maria will be able to tie her own shoelaces. A Discovery Channel Production. (45 minutes)
