The Age of Charles II

This program looks at some of the lasting achievements of the age of Charles II and at the life and character of the king who, somewhat waywardly, presided over them. The period between his restoration in 1660 and his death in 1685 saw the birth of the Royal Society, the establishment of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, the growth of the Royal Navy, the Great Fire and the rebirth of London, the architecture of Christopher Wren, and the development of the mathematical sciences. The program also traces Charles’s personal history, from his escape following the battle of Worcester in 1651, to the period of exile and restoration, to the Exclusion crisis, which prompted Charles’s finest display of statesmanship and political acumen.
