Brain Disorders: Seeking New Remedies

In this program, ABC News anchor Ted Koppel and correspondent Robert Krulwich follow a husband-and-wife team of pioneering brain surgeons at Mount Sinai Medical Center as they operate on patients with dystonia and an arteriovenous malformation. Then, the focus shifts to a pair of couples with children with special needs: a 6-year-old with autism and a 43-year-old with Williams syndrome. Are the two fathers—a brain and language development specialist at Johns Hopkins University and a retired biology professor—more able to connect with their children than other parents would be? (44 minutes)
