Alice Walker: A Portrait in the First Person

Alice Walker’s first novel was inspired by the sight of a murdered woman, stretched out on an undertaker’s table in ragged clothes, old newspaper stuffed to fill the hole in her single, tattered shoe. "I could not not write about such a thing," she recalls. In this program, Alice Walker recalls the defining moments of her childhood and explores the themes that course through her novels and poetry—the devastating effects of violence and abuse on women and children, and the determination to overcome the barriers of race and gender to achieve a life worth living.
