Diagnosing Heart Disease

Most patients who end up in an emergency room for heart disease have already had a heart attack or die before they reach the hospital. This program explains what heart disease is and how it may be prevented. The program examines warning signs of heart attacks such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, a family history of heart disease, and the increased risk of heart disease caused by smoking. The program also shows a patient having an electrocardiogram and explains other tests such as the use of the radioactive substance, thallium, which allows doctors to view the blood flow in the heart; a non-invasive test which uses sound waves to produce a picture of the heart and its movement; and cardio-catheterization. (18 minutes)
