Epilepsy: Breaking the Barrier

This program profiles a man afflicted with epilepsy, along with his family, coping with the disease. The program shows how people afflicted with epilepsy can lead normal lives, and explains the different types of epileptic seizures and which are most common. The program also includes video segments showing a grand mal seizure and a staring spell. A neurologist discusses the variety of tests used to monitor seizures, including EEG, CAT scan, and MRI. He also discusses the medications presently used for treatment and talks about the patients’ use of Dilantin and Felbatol. In addition to drug therapy, a surgical procedure to remove the area of the brain that triggers epileptic seizures is explained. (18 minutes)
