Coping with Stress

Since it was first coined by Canadian scientist Hans Selye, the word stress has been part of our everyday vocabulary. What exactly is stress? This program explains that it is a biological response of an organism to its environment, and indispensable to survival. However, when stress becomes chronic, as is often the case in contemporary life, stress can lead to sickness, or even death. However, stress is not limited to living organisms: the concept of stress is used by engineers to define the tension forces in structures such as bridges, as well as the mechanical strains in biological tissues such as bone and muscle. Using this stress concept, biomechanical technicians can increase strength and resilience in prostheses designed for the handicapped. (23 minutes)
