The Desert

This program defines the conditions that create the desert and explains that deserts may be sterile or—like the Sonora Desert—consist of fertile vegetation. It shows the diverse strategies by which different kinds of plants survive the desert climate: some drop their leaves when it is dry and flourish again during the slightest rainfall; others have thick and spongy leaves to retain water. The program also looks at desert fauna: at reptiles such as turtles, lizards, and snakes that are the best adapted for life in the deserts; and at such mammals as the rat, which are also adapted to water-deprived regions. (23 minutes)
