The Pampas and the Chaco

Pampa in the language of the Incas means "prairie"—a landscape typically devoid of trees and open to the wind, either the dry and cold pampean wind that blows from the south, or the damp and redolently tropical northern zonda. This is the limitless grassland of the gaucho and of a host of idiosyncratic animals and birds like the rhea with unique nesting and hatching behaviors. The chaco, an intermediary ecosystem between the open grassy plateau and the dense tropical jungle, may be a region of trees and bushes struggling in the drought or a landscape covered with lakes and pools. Either way, it offers an extraordinary wealth of fauna. An RTVE production. (27 minutes)
