The study of a block of rock salt leads to a discussion of sphere packing as an aid to understanding simple crystal types, and treats the energy of formation of salt in terms of a Born-Haber cycle. The electrolysis of molten salt and brine is discussed, and the industrial-scale electrolysis of brine is shown, covering the mercury, diaphragm, and membrane cells. (34 minutes)
