Blue Baby Syndrome

Dr. Ross Ungerleider of Duke University Medical Center performs a procedure called a "fontan" on Ashley Nicole Fridley, a four-year-old who was born with a deformed heart. Ashley does not get enough oxygenated blood in her bloodstream, which causes her to tire easily and gives her skin the gray-blue appearance which is referred to as "blue baby syndrome." In this program, Dr. Ungerleider reroutes the plumbing in her heart by hooking up her atrium to her pulmonary arteries, thereby delivering more oxygenated blood to her bloodstream. A Discovery Channel Production. (45 minutes)
