Composing

How does one embellish a simple tune with melody, harmony, and a variety of timbres to produce an interesting piece of music? In this program, renowned composer George Fenton demonstrates the various techniques on piano and synthesizer. Fenton incorporates accented passing notes and suspensions, plays portions of the piece as “open score” to show what happens when instruments receive separate staves, and adds ostinato pedal bass to illustrate how note values can be doubled and time signature altered. This is an excellent instructional tool for teaching students how musical devices are used to create works of greater texture and complexity. Produced by the Open University. (24 minutes)
