Following a Score

In this program, students trace a score through sections of two well-known works for string quartet. Beginning with the first and third movements of Haydn’s String Quartet in D, Op. 76 No. 5, students look for theme movement among instruments and changes in dynamic levels. In extracts from Borodin’s String Quartet No. 1 in A, double-stopping and widespread arpeggios produce complexity within the score. The final movement of the Haydn Quartet illustrates its five perfect cadences; alternation of the main theme between first violin and cello; the successive predominance of first violin; octave writing for all four instruments; and the cessation of movement through the use of successive half-note chords. Music is performed by the Chilingirian and Borodin quartets. Produced by the Open University. (25 minutes)
