From a Different Shore: The Japanese-American Experience

Japanese-Americans are often deemed to be a model ethnic community who have achieved their “success” by virtue of their own efforts. However, the road to success was a difficult one and, as a result, the Japanese-American experience has been very distinct from that of other immigrants. This program explores this experience, starting with the first immigrants from Japan, the Issei, through to the experiences of their children, the Nisei, who were confined in camps during World War II, and their grandchildren. The program explores these experiences through the lives of three families whose members span all of the generations. They offer their view of the U.S. and what it means and has meant to be an American of Japanese ancestry. Produced by the Open University. (50 minutes)
