From the conquest of the South Pole in 1912, to mans first tentative steps on the moon and then further into space, this program looks at exploration throughout the 20th century. It shows how the spirit of the explorer has driven people into the most inhospitable of territories to map every inch of the worlds surface. The program also looks at the problems the explorer leaves in his or her wake, as Antarctica has been opened up to tourists and Mt. Everest is covered with litter left behind by climbers. The program includes interviews with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who crossed the Antarctic continent on foot; Buzz Aldrin, who walked on the moon with Neil Armstrong in 1969; and scientist Richard Taylor, who discusses the next frontiers in space exploration.
