Konrad Adenauer

The first chancellor of postwar Germany, Adenauer faced a daunting task. The country was divided into four zones, flooded with refugees, and suffering from Russian blockades. Adenauer was 73 when his Christian Democratic Union won the first federal election. By the 1950s, Adenauer, a committed European, had achieved full nation status for Germany, and membership both in NATO and what was to become the European Union. This is the story of how Adenauer took a country that was devastated by war and turned it into a prosperous democracy. (25 minutes)
